After four months of net sales, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) turned net buyers in July and kept on buying until early August. Domestic institutions, in turn, continue to be the more reliable source of market liquidity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;July,&nbsp;foreign&nbsp;investors&nbsp;invested&nbsp;around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/indian-shares-set-muted-start-oil-caution-2026-08-11\/\"><u>$2.12<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>billion<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>in<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>Indian<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>stocks.<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>Despite<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>the<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>pressure<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/indian-shares-set-muted-start-oil-caution-2026-08-11\/\"><u>from rising crude oil prices again on Indian benchmarks, another approximately $1.5 billion<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;came into the market by August 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For&nbsp;investors,&nbsp;the&nbsp;important&nbsp;thing&nbsp;to&nbsp;watch&nbsp;is&nbsp;whether&nbsp;this&nbsp;is&nbsp;a&nbsp;structural&nbsp;shift&nbsp;in&nbsp;global&nbsp;allocation in favor of India or merely a catch-up move after significant foreign outflows over the past few months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 style=\"font-size:28px\">FII&nbsp;DII&nbsp;Data:&nbsp;What&nbsp;Has&nbsp;Actually&nbsp;Changed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;latest&nbsp;FII&nbsp;DII&nbsp;data&nbsp;indicates&nbsp;a&nbsp;more&nbsp;definite&nbsp;improvement&nbsp;in&nbsp;foreign&nbsp;sentiment&nbsp;than&nbsp;the&nbsp;first half of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FPIs&nbsp;have&nbsp;been&nbsp;net&nbsp;buyers&nbsp;of&nbsp;equities&nbsp;in&nbsp;July,&nbsp;investing&nbsp;approximately&nbsp;\u20b920,200&nbsp;crore&nbsp;after&nbsp;four months&nbsp;of&nbsp;net&nbsp;selling.&nbsp;Foreign&nbsp;investors&nbsp;have&nbsp;invested&nbsp;an&nbsp;additional&nbsp;\u20b912,921&nbsp;crore&nbsp;in&nbsp;the&nbsp;first week of August alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is important because overseas investors had been cutting down on Indian exposure for most&nbsp;of&nbsp;2026.&nbsp;It&nbsp;is&nbsp;not&nbsp;as&nbsp;if&nbsp;foreign&nbsp;equity&nbsp;outflows&nbsp;had&nbsp;dried&nbsp;up&nbsp;after&nbsp;July&#8217;s&nbsp;rebound;&nbsp;they&nbsp;were still in the neighborhood of $25.86 billion through early August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So,&nbsp;the&nbsp;current&nbsp;FII&nbsp;inflows&nbsp;into&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jarvisinvest.com\/jarvis-library\/a-decline-in-rupee-value-will-affect-the-indian-market\/\" title=\"\">Indian&nbsp;market<\/a>&nbsp;should&nbsp;be&nbsp;considered&nbsp;as&nbsp;a&nbsp;premature recovery and not a reversal of the year-long selling trend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daily&nbsp;flows&nbsp;can&nbsp;be&nbsp;disruptive&nbsp;as&nbsp;well.&nbsp;For&nbsp;instance,&nbsp;on&nbsp;July&nbsp;29,&nbsp;FIIs&nbsp;bought&nbsp;\u20b92,982&nbsp;crore&nbsp;net while&nbsp;DIIs&nbsp;bought&nbsp;another&nbsp;\u20b9998&nbsp;crore,&nbsp;resulting&nbsp;in&nbsp;combined&nbsp;institutional&nbsp;buying&nbsp;of&nbsp;\u20b93,980&nbsp;crore. Positive sessions are a good sign, but weekly and monthly inflows are more significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 style=\"font-size:28px\">Why&nbsp;Are&nbsp;Foreign&nbsp;Investors&nbsp;Returning&nbsp;to&nbsp;India?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Several&nbsp;conditions&nbsp;have&nbsp;improved&nbsp;at&nbsp;the&nbsp;same&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indian corporate earnings have, on balance, proven to be resilient, valuations have come off some&nbsp;highs&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jarvisinvest.com\/jarvis-library\/high-dividend-large-cap-stocks-in-india-to-watch-now\/\" title=\"\">large cap<\/a>&nbsp;industries,&nbsp;and&nbsp;the&nbsp;rupee&nbsp;has&nbsp;strengthened&nbsp;from&nbsp;heavy&nbsp;losses&nbsp;earlier this year. The overall <a href=\"https:\/\/jarvisinvest.com\/jarvis-library\/liquidity-or-inflation-rbi-policy-june-2025\/\" title=\"\">liquidity<\/a> environment has also improved due to RBI measures to attract foreign currency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Foreign&nbsp;investors&nbsp;are&nbsp;also&nbsp;reviewing&nbsp;India&nbsp;vis-\u00e0-vis&nbsp;other&nbsp;Asian&nbsp;markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>July was especially fascinating as foreign investors were selling equities in a number of key Asian markets while India attracted $2.12 billion of inflows. As worries arose over high investment&nbsp;in&nbsp;AI&nbsp;and&nbsp;cash-flow&nbsp;pressures&nbsp;in&nbsp;the&nbsp;chip&nbsp;sector,&nbsp;Taiwan&nbsp;saw&nbsp;approximately&nbsp;$22.95 billion in foreign selling, while South Korea saw approximately $6.26 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This&nbsp;suggests&nbsp;that&nbsp;there&nbsp;may&nbsp;be&nbsp;a&nbsp;slow&nbsp;shift&nbsp;instead&nbsp;of&nbsp;just&nbsp;new&nbsp;capital&nbsp;coming&nbsp;into&nbsp;Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The attraction of India is different. Its market includes financials, healthcare, domestic consumption&nbsp;and&nbsp;industrials,&nbsp;and&nbsp;consumer&nbsp;companies&nbsp;that&nbsp;are&nbsp;not&nbsp;as&nbsp;directly&nbsp;tied&nbsp;to&nbsp;the&nbsp;global <a href=\"https:\/\/jarvisinvest.com\/jarvis-library\/semiconductor-stocks-in-india-entire-study-of-the-sector-ai-chips-data-centers\/\" title=\"\">semiconductor<\/a> and AI investment cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But&nbsp;a&nbsp;big&nbsp;risk&nbsp;is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jarvisinvest.com\/jarvis-library\/with-crude-oil-above-82-should-you-rebalance-your-portfolio-from-these-stocks\/\" title=\"\">crude&nbsp;oil<\/a>.&nbsp;Brent&nbsp;traded&nbsp;at&nbsp;around&nbsp;$90&nbsp;a&nbsp;barrel&nbsp;on&nbsp;Aug.&nbsp;11,&nbsp;adding&nbsp;to&nbsp;a&nbsp;0.46 percent drop in the Nifty despite continued foreign inflows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 style=\"font-size:28px\">FII&nbsp;Buying&nbsp;Today&nbsp;Is&nbsp;Becoming&nbsp;More&nbsp;Selective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;more&nbsp;significant&nbsp;question,&nbsp;besides&nbsp;the&nbsp;amount&nbsp;of&nbsp;money&nbsp;foreigners&nbsp;are&nbsp;investing,&nbsp;is&nbsp;where they are investing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Foreign&nbsp;investors&nbsp;bought&nbsp;around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/markets\/stocks\/news\/fpis-stay-in-buying-mode-consumer-services-lead-sectoral-inflows-in-first-half-of-july\/articleshow\/132549051.cms?from=mdr\"><u>\u20b915,560<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>crore<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>in<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>the<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>first<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>half<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>of<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>July,<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>across<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>various<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>sectors.<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/markets\/stocks\/news\/fpis-stay-in-buying-mode-consumer-services-lead-sectoral-inflows-in-first-half-of-july\/articleshow\/132549051.cms?from=mdr\"><u>Consumer<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>services<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>saw<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>an<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>infusion<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>of<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>\u20b97,361<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>crore,<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>while<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>metals<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>and<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>mining<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>and<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>healthcare<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/markets\/stocks\/news\/fpis-stay-in-buying-mode-consumer-services-lead-sectoral-inflows-in-first-half-of-july\/articleshow\/132549051.cms?from=mdr\"><u>picked<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>up<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>\u20b95,993<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>crore<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>and<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>\u20b94,101<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><u>crore,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;respectively.&nbsp;There&nbsp;was&nbsp;also&nbsp;buying&nbsp;by&nbsp;banks&nbsp;and selling of automobiles, capital goods and telecom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;pattern&nbsp;flipped&nbsp;back&nbsp;in&nbsp;the&nbsp;second&nbsp;half&nbsp;of&nbsp;July. SIP contributions were<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/india-equity-fund-inflows-fall-july-large-caps-see-first-outflows-over-2-12-2026-08-11\/\"><u>close to March&#8217;s record at \u20b931,961 crore<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Small-cap&nbsp;funds&nbsp;saw&nbsp;a&nbsp;record&nbsp;inflow&nbsp;of&nbsp;\u20b97,768&nbsp;crore&nbsp;and&nbsp;mid-cap&nbsp;schemes&nbsp;saw&nbsp;an&nbsp;inflow&nbsp;of \u20b96,192&nbsp;crore.&nbsp;Large-cap&nbsp;funds,&nbsp;however,&nbsp;saw&nbsp;outflows&nbsp;of&nbsp;\u20b91,322&nbsp;crore,&nbsp;the&nbsp;first&nbsp;monthly redemption since December 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mutual&nbsp;fund&nbsp;buying&nbsp;is&nbsp;not&nbsp;the&nbsp;same&nbsp;as&nbsp;daily&nbsp;buying&nbsp;by&nbsp;DIIs.&nbsp;Insurers,&nbsp;banks&nbsp;and&nbsp;other&nbsp;domestic institutions are also included in the DIIs.
