India’s Forex Reserves Hit Record $741 Billion as RBI Builds a Bigger Rupee Defence

India’s forex reserves climbed to a fresh all-time high of $741 billion in the week to 28-August. However, it must be noted that the full impact will only be known by 11-September when the swap window closes. By then, it is expected that the RBI forex reserves should cross $800 billion, giving about 12 months of export cover. This will give the RBI enough firepower to intervene easily to defend the rupee; and it will also force short sellers on the rupee to be cautious. Reserve accretion was over $23 billion in the last 2 weeks, with the best of late collections yet to reflect.

Stock Market News: SEBI Clears NSE IPO After a Decade, ₹30,000 Crore Issue in Focus

Adding a feather to the cap of Ashish Chauhan, SEBI finally approved the IPO of NSE; giving its observations. This paves the way for one of India’s biggest IPOs, which had been on hold for more than 10 years. The IPO will represent about 6% of the outstanding shares of NSE with the issue size estimated to be in the region of ₹30,000 crore. SBI will make the biggest windfall, offloading about 2.48 crore shares of NSE in the OFS. Other major sellers include Morgan Stanley and CPPIB, who will offer about 2.7 crore shares in total. LIC will not participate in the OFS.

Stock Market News: CLSA Turns Bullish on ONGC and Oil India as Crude Market Tightens

CLSA has given a thumbs up to upstream oil with a bullish call on ONGC and OIL. The brokerage expects the crude oil market to further tighten over the next couple of months. While ONGC is expected to offer 71% upside, OIL will offer about 13% upside from current levels. CLSA pointed out that between March and July, nearly 70% of the shortfall through the Straits of Hormuz had been met by China drawing down on its SPR. That is unlikely to extend further. ONGC was pricing in crude prices below the current market levels, so it should see maximum upside.

Ashish Chauhan will bring the success of NSE IPO, but it could also be a hint that Tata Sons is preparing for an IPO. The contest finally gets interesting.

Stock Market News: CBI Books Subhash Chandra in ₹1,332 Crore LIC Housing Finance Loan Case

The CBI has booked Subhash Chandra of Zee in the ₹1,332 crore LIC Housing Finance (LICHFL) loan fraud case. This was based on a complaint filed by LICHFL. In 2018, LICHFL had extended loans of ₹500 crore to Vasant Sagar Properties, a Zee group company. This was backed by a personal guarantee by Subhash Chandra. According to LICHFL, this was based on false and inflated net worth documents furnished by the promoters. The entire loan facility had subsequently gone into default. LICHFL had filed a case of criminal conspiracy and breach of trust against Chandra.

Global Central Banks Bring Gold Home as RBI Moves 77% of Its Reserves to India

While RBI has now moved around 77%  of its gold reserves to Indian shores, other central banks of the Netherlands and France are also doing the same. The Netherlands has shifted about 86 tonnes of gold from the US to London, while France has brought back about 129 tonnes of gold from the US. Central banks say that this gives them better crisis preparedness and access to gold. The real reason may be to prevent an access to such gold for the US, after the experience of Russia. Germany already moved substantial quantities of gold back from the US about 10 years back.
