The Indian stock market is tracking important developments across banking, automobiles, defence, digital investments and corporate governance. Today’s stock market news includes a leadership transition at HDFC Bank, a fresh dispute over Tata Sons’ chairman reappointment, contrasting automobile earnings and a major defence procurement approval. Jarvis Invest brings you eight key developments that investors should understand as they assess corporate performance, industry trends and emerging market risks.
Stock Market News: Anup Bagchi Takes Charge at HDFC Bank
Veteran banker, Anup Bagchi, took charges as the MD and CEO of HDFC Bank on 27-October. Ironically, he takes charge from Jagdishan at a time when the stock price of HDFC Bank is hovering close to its 52-week lows. Apart from reputational issues, Anup has to also deal with a manpower vacuum. Even Kaizad Bharucha will be demitting office by the end of 2026, while other senior officials are slated to retire. The other big challenge will be to deal with the regulatory and governance issues, as well as work on expanding net interest margins (NIM).
Stock Market News: Noel Tata Challenges N. Chandrasekaran’s Reappointment
Noel Tata has now challenged the reappointment of N Chandrasekharan as chairman of Tata Sons; calling the resolution void. According to Tata, reappointment of Chandra was not on the meeting agenda and has sought an unedited video recording of the 17-September meeting. On the agenda was just a debriefing from the Nominations & Remunerations Committee (NRC), not any decision on reappointing Chandra. While Noel Tata had voted against the resolution, others managed to hijack the meeting through the back door to reappoint Chandra for another 5 years.
Stock Market News: Venu Srinivasan’s Family Faces an Asset-Sharing Dispute
Even as Venu Srinivasan tries to play truant at the Tata group; he has problems in his own backyard. His wife Mallika Srinivasan and daughter Lakshmi Venu have sought an amicable resolution to the sharing of assets. Venu Srinivasan and his son Sudarshan Venu had filed caveats with the Madras High Court. The caveat is a kind of safeguard, wherein the court cannot announce any decision or pass any judgement on the subject without giving adequate hearing to the other party. The two ladies have contended that management can be equated with ownership of assets.
Auto Earnings Diverge: Maruti Suzuki Profits Fall While Bajaj Auto Grows
It was a tale of contrasting auto sector results. Maruti Suzuki reported -24.6% lower net profits for Q2FY27 at ₹2,466 crore, even as revenues were up 26% yoy at ₹53,356 crore. The profits of Maruti were hit by higher commodity costs amid the conflict and MTM losses on investments. However, Bajaj Auto reported 35% higher net profits for Q2FY27 at ₹3,354 crore, while revenues grew 34% to ₹20,003 crore. Even as domestic sales were under some pressure, it was more than redeemed by export sales. Better cost control helped Bajaj Auto to sustain robust EBITDA margins.
Swiggy Instamart’s Inventory Model May Offer Limited Profitability Gains
Even as Swiggy Instamart is shifting to an inventory ownership model, analysts are sceptical that it may not make a big difference to its profitability. An inventory-based model gives better control over price, supply chains, and product mix. With foreign ownership in Swiggy falling below 50%, they can technically opt for the inventory model. Analysts are of the view that this shift will add about ₹4 per order, while Swiggy needs to add ₹30 per order to be able to break even. Even the guidance by Swiggy for FY26 and FY27 does not see major benefits from this transition.
Stock Market News: ₹2.12 Lakh Crore Defence Procurement Boosts Order Visibility
Major defence stocks have been in focus after the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) cleared ₹2,12,000 in defence procurement from defence companies. These orders span the full gamut of defence; like defence electronics, air defence, helicopters, artillery, unmanned aerial systems, naval platforms etc. These will be executed and delivered over a number of years, but the order visibility is there. Several players like HAL, BEL, Bharat Dynamics, BEML, L&T, and Solar Industries are likely to benefit. Execution will be the key challenge for defence companies.
Digital Gold Purchases Surge as Investors Seek Alternatives
With restrictions on the purchase of gold ETFs and gold FOFs imposed by mutual funds, and sovereign gold bond not being issued any longer; many Indian investors are turning to digital gold. In September, digital gold purchases were up 83% yoy at ₹2,590 crore. For the first 9 months of 2026, purchase of digital gold was up 76% yoy at 16.3 tonnes. Typically, digital gold has been preferred by small-ticket buyers and SEBI has urged brokers not to distribute these products as they are unregulated. Limits on gold ETFs and FOFs could drive investors to digital gold.
Stock Market News: PSU Banks Improve NIMs as Private Lenders Face Pressure
The Q2FY27 results of banks has highlighted a contrast where NIMs of PSU banks have been improving while private sector banks have seen their NIMs under pressure. One reason is that the private banks have been more aggressive in FCNR(B) deposit mobilization, which resulted in a spike in cost of funds. It is not clear if this is a one-time dichotomy or it is likely to stay. Q2 saw PSU Bank NIMs improve to 2.58%, while the NIMs of private banks were flat at 3.29%. Loan growth has been robust in recent quarters, forcing most banks to rely on higher cost deposits to fill the gap.
Conclusion
Today’s stock market news highlights leadership and governance challenges at major business groups, divergent automobile earnings, defence procurement opportunities and changing investment preferences around gold. Banking results also underline the importance of funding costs and net interest margins in determining profitability. Jarvis Invest will continue tracking these developments to help investors understand the corporate and economic trends shaping the market.
