Reasons to Watch HDFC Stocks after Q1 FY27 Results with Jarvis Invest

Whenever HDFC Bank announces its quarterly results, investors across Dalal Street pay close attention to the hdfc stocks. As India’s largest private sector bank, HDFC Bank is more than just another financial institution it is often considered a reflection of the country’s economic health. Its performance offers valuable insights into credit demand, consumer spending, corporate borrowing, and the overall direction of India’s banking sector.

For the quarter ended June 30, 2026 (Q1 FY27), HDFC Bank reported a net profit of ₹19,060 crore, registering a 5% year-on-year increase. Deposits grew by a healthy 14.7%, while the bank continued to maintain exceptional asset quality with a Gross NPA of just 1.17%. At first glance, the numbers suggest another steady quarter for one of India’s most trusted banking franchises.

Key Q1 FY27 Numbers of hdfc stocks

Metric Q1 FY27 Q1 FY26 YoY Change
Net Profit ₹19,060 crore ₹18,160 crore 5%
Net Interest Income (NII) ₹33,530 crore ₹31,440 crore 6.7%
Net Interest Margin (NIM) 3.26% 3.40% Lower
CASA Ratio 32% Higher last year Declined

Yet, the market wasn’t focused on profits. Instead, investors were concerned about a different number Net Interest Margin (NIM). The bank’s NIM declined to 3.26%, its lowest level in recent years, raising concerns over whether rising funding costs could slow earnings growth in the coming quarters.

The immediate reaction may have been cautious, but long-term investors should ask a more important question: Is the market overreacting to a temporary challenge while overlooking HDFC Bank’s enduring strengths?

The Headline Numbers Don’t Tell the Complete Story

Compared to banking stocks Q1 results peers like ICICI Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank, HDFC Bank’s profit growth appeared relatively modest. However, comparing headline profits alone ignores the unique transition the bank is currently navigating.

Following its historic merger with HDFC Ltd., the bank inherited a much larger balance sheet and significantly expanded its housing finance portfolio. While the merger strengthened HDFC Bank’s long-term competitive position, it also changed the composition of its liabilities. Housing finance companies traditionally rely more on market borrowings, whereas banks depend heavily on customer deposits. Integrating these two funding structures has temporarily increased the bank’s cost of funds, putting pressure on lending margins.

This is precisely why the decline in NIM should be viewed in context rather than isolation. The pressure is not unique to HDFC Bank. Banks across India are facing intense competition for deposits as customers increasingly shift towards higher-yield fixed deposits. To sustain loan growth, lenders are offering higher interest rates on deposits, narrowing the spread between borrowing costs and lending income.

In other words, the challenge is cyclical rather than structural.

Strong Fundamentals Continue to Differentiate HDFC Bank

While short-term margins have come under pressure, the bank’s core business remains remarkably resilient. HDFC Bank continues to operate one of the most diversified banking franchises in the country, generating revenue from retail lending, corporate banking, MSME financing, credit cards, treasury operations, wealth management, and digital banking. This diversified model reduces dependence on any single business segment and provides stability across economic cycles.

Another major strength is its deposit franchise. Despite operating in one of the most competitive deposit environments in recent years, HDFC Bank still managed to grow deposits by 14.7%, highlighting the trust customers continue to place in the brand. Few financial institutions in India possess such a loyal and diversified customer base.

The bank also continues to demonstrate exceptional discipline in credit underwriting. Its Gross NPA of 1.17% remains among the lowest in the industry, reflecting prudent lending practices and effective risk management. At a time when many global banks are struggling with deteriorating loan books, HDFC Bank’s asset quality remains one of its biggest competitive advantages.

Why Deposit Growth Will Decide the Next Phase of Growth

If there is one metric investors should monitor over the coming quarters, it is deposit mobilisation rather than quarterly profits.

India’s banking industry is currently witnessing a fierce competition for deposits. Credit demand continues to remain strong, but deposit growth has not kept pace, forcing banks to rely on higher-cost term deposits. This “deposit war” has become the biggest reason behind industry-wide margin compression.

For HDFC Bank, improving the mix of low-cost CASA deposits while sustaining healthy loan growth will be critical. Management has repeatedly emphasised deposit mobilisation as a strategic priority, and any improvement in this area could gradually support margin recovery. If funding costs begin to stabilise, the bank’s earnings could accelerate without requiring aggressive credit expansion.

Technical Outlook Suggests Patience Rather Than Panic

From a technical perspective, HDFC Bank appears to be in a consolidation phase rather than a long-term downtrend. Although the stock is currently trading below its 50-week, 100-week, and 200-week moving averages, reflecting a weaker medium-term trend, its long-term structural uptrend has not been invalidated.

The current technical setup suggests that institutional momentum has softened following the recent correction, but it does not necessarily indicate a deterioration in the bank’s underlying business fundamentals. Momentum indicators have also begun stabilising, with the Relative Strength Index (RSI) hovering around 35, indicating that selling pressure has been significant and the stock is approaching, though not yet entering, the classic oversold zone.

This increases the possibility of a technical rebound, although confirmation through price action and trading volumes will remain important before signalling a sustained trend reversal.

Historically, HDFC Bank has often gone through extended periods of sideways movement before resuming its long-term upward trajectory. Investors who focused on short-term fluctuations frequently missed the larger wealth-creation story that followed.

From a technical standpoint, the ₹690–700 range has emerged as a key long-term support zone, while the 200-week, 50-week and 100-week moving averages are likely to act as important resistance levels during any recovery.

While technical indicators alone should never drive investment decisions, they currently suggest consolidation rather than structural weakness, reinforcing the importance of patience as the market waits for clearer signs of renewed buying momentum.

Jarvis Verdict

Quarterly earnings often influence stock prices, but they rarely change the quality of a business overnight. HDFC Bank’s Q1 FY27 results reinforce this principle. The bank is facing genuine near-term challenges in the form of margin compression and elevated funding costs, but these pressures are largely industry-wide and closely linked to the post-merger integration process.

What remains unchanged is the bank’s exceptional franchise, disciplined lending culture, industry-leading asset quality, and strong customer trust. These are the characteristics that have enabled HDFC Bank to consistently outperform across multiple economic cycles.

For long-term investors, the current debate should not revolve around whether margins declined from 3.4% to 3.26%. The more relevant question is whether HDFC Bank will continue to remain India’s dominant private sector bank over the next decade. Given its diversified business model, robust balance sheet, and proven management execution, the answer appears to be yes.

Periods of temporary uncertainty often create opportunities to accumulate high-quality businesses at more reasonable valuations. While margin recovery may take time, HDFC Bank’s long-term fundamentals remain firmly intact. For investors seeking exposure to India’s banking sector, it continues to represent one of the strongest long-term compounders rather than merely another quarterly earnings story.
