EV Stocks in India - Is Now a Good Time to Watch the Sector?

India registered more than 3.5 lakh electric vehicles in October 2026, the highest monthly figure in the VAHAN data series reviewed for this article. Electric two-wheeler registrations rose to about 2.24 lakh, up 7.25% from September. Yet electric models accounted for 9.7% of all two-wheeler registrations, down from 11.6% the previous month. More buyers registered electric two-wheelers, and the overall two-wheeler market grew even faster. For investors tracking EV stocks in India, the next question is whether electric two-wheelers can gain a larger share of the market after the festive season.

Is now a good time to watch EV stocks in India? Yes. The next few months will show which companies can sustain demand beyond the festive season and whether higher volumes are improving margins and cash flow. Start with three questions.

Are customers still buying after festive offers end? Is the company making more on each vehicle it sells? And how much future growth does the share price already reflect?

What Do October’s EV Registrations Tell Investors?

SegmentOctober 2026 readingWhat investors can track next
Total electric vehiclesAbout 3.54 lakh registrations, excluding low-speed electric two-wheelers in the data series usedWhether registrations hold up over the next three months
Electric two-wheelersAbout 2.24 lakh registrations, up 7.25% month on month, while EV share of the wider two-wheeler market slipped to 9.7%Which manufacturers hold market share once festive offers wind down
Electric passenger vehiclesRoughly 36,000 registrations. In the passenger car and cab series, EV penetration fell from 8.7% in September to 7.3% in OctoberWhether demand for new models continues beyond the launch period

Registration totals can vary with the date the data was pulled and the vehicle categories included. Use the same VAHAN data series and category when comparing periods.

Take an electric scooter maker that gains market share in October. If the gains came from a wider dealer network and customers choosing higher-priced models, they may support earnings beyond the festive season.

If they came mainly from discounts, the company may have sold more scooters while earning less on each one. Pricing, margins and warranty costs in the next set of results can help tell those stories apart.

Which Parts of India’s EV Sector Are Worth Watching?

1. Electric two-wheelers

TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto and Ather Energy ranked among the leading players in October’s high-speed electric two-wheeler registration data. If you’re researching these businesses, track their retail market share alongside pricing, service coverage and warranty costs. Selling more scooters through a bigger network can support growth, but servicing those vehicles also comes at a cost.

2. Electric passenger vehicles

For a diversified automaker such as Mahindra & Mahindra, a strong EV launch is one part of a much larger business. Track model-level demand after the initial launch, how much discounting is needed to sustain sales, and what management discloses about EV profitability. Those details help you judge whether EV growth is large enough to influence overall earnings.

3. Batteries and auto components

EV adoption can create demand for batteries, power electronics and other components. When researching an auto ancillary stock, check how much revenue it actually earns from EV customers, where disclosed. A new facility is worth tracking when customers start placing repeat orders and utilisation rises enough to justify the investment.

4. Charging infrastructure, electric buses and fleets

For charging businesses, look at usage per charger, uptime and operating costs. For bus manufacturers and fleet suppliers, follow the order book through to deliveries, payments and cash collection. An operator can expand its network or win a large contract well before that expansion starts generating cash.

What Does PM E-DRIVE Mean for EV Stocks?

The Ministry of Heavy Industries increased the PM E-DRIVE scheme outlay to ₹11,900 crore and extended the scheme period through 31 March 2028 for covered segments, except the L5 electric three-wheeler category, which closed on 26 December 2025. Incentive eligibility depends on the vehicle category and scheme terms.

When reading company results, look for signs the business can stay competitive as incentives change. Lower manufacturing costs, better battery sourcing and fewer warranty claims can give a manufacturer more room to price its vehicles while protecting margins.

How to Evaluate EV Stocks Before Investing

  • Track registrations and market share together. Start with three months of retail registrations and compare them with the same period a year earlier. Then check how the company’s share of its vehicle category changed. That helps separate a company gaining ground from a market-wide festive lift.
  • Check whether sales growth is showing up in earnings. Look for changes in pricing, discounts, warranty costs and segment margins. If a company only reports a combined auto margin, look for separate EV disclosures before drawing conclusions about EV profitability.
  • Read cash flow alongside the expansion plans. A new factory or product line can absorb cash even as revenue rises. Compare operating cash flow with capital expenditure and check how the company plans to finance any shortfall.
  • Look at what the share price already assumes. For profitable businesses, compare valuations with relevant peers and the company’s own history. For loss-making businesses, focus on cash burn, available funding and what has to happen for the company to break even.
  • Compare the chart with the sector. Track the stock’s weekly performance against the Nifty Auto Index and, where relevant, the Nifty EV & New Age Automotive Index. Sustained outperformance alongside improving business results can help you prioritise which companies to research further. The EV benchmark covers the wider new-age automotive ecosystem, including companies involved in technologies beyond battery-electric vehicles.

If you’re searching for the best ai app for trading in india, compare tools based on the decisions you need to make. For a long-term investor, that could mean checking whether a new EV stock adds useful exposure or duplicates the automakers and component suppliers already in the portfolio.

How Could EV Stocks Fit Into Your Portfolio?

Before adding an EV stocks, look at what you already own. An automaker, an auto component supplier and an EV-themed fund may all be exposed to the same slowdown in vehicle demand. Checking that overlap helps you decide how much additional exposure makes sense for your goals and risk profile.

Then ask whether the share price already assumes the company will deliver it.
