Today’s stock market news brings key developments across banking, aviation, technology, institutional ownership and corporate earnings. From RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra defending the early closure of the FCNR(B) window and IndiGo expanding its market share to concerns around AI’s impact on services exports and Gen-Z participation in F&O trading, Jarvis Invest brings you the major developments shaping Indian markets and the economy today.

Stock Market News: RBI Governor Defends Early FCNR(B) Window Closure as Combined Inflows May Reach $80 Billion

RBI governor, Sanjay Malhotra, defended the decision to close FCNR(B) window one month early on 31-Aug. RBI is expecting total inflows of $80 billion from FCNR(B), OFCBs, and ECB windows combined. The special window for OFCBs and ECBs will be open till end of December 2026. Since the inflows had turned into a deluge, RBI had to be cautious about how much deposits it can accept, since the RBI is sponsoring the forex cover. Typically, forex cover may cost around 3% a year, so over 5 years, the forex cover will cost the RBI $12 billion, even with $80 billion flows.

Citi’s Institutional Business Crosses ₹1 Trillion Three Years After Consumer Banking Exit

After Citi sold its consumer banking business to Axis, about 3 years back, it has managed to scale up its institutional business substantially. In the 3 years since its exit from the consumer business, Citi’s institutional business has crossed ₹1 trillion, growing at a CAGR of 30% in the latest year. The CAGR growth over the last 3 years remains in double-digits. The institutional book growth has been driven by increased client activity, capital investments, and financing demand. Bank credit overall had picked up to 17.7%. Selling consumer business has released lock-in capital for Citi.

Stock Market News: IndiGo Raises Market Share to 67.4% as Domestic Air Traffic Falls 4.8% in July

Even as the government is trying its best to curtail the airline duopoly, Indigo raised its market share to 67.4% in July 2026. Interestingly, the month saw 4.8% lower traffic. Air India has held its market share at 24%. Domestic airlines carried 1.20 crore passengers in July 2026, of which Indigo alone carried 80.82 lakh passengers. Although the 2 biggest airlines have cornered close to 92% of the Indian aviation market, the gap between Indigo and Air India is quite huge. The muted growth came amidst a soft aviation environment, aircraft availability and operational constraints.

Stock Market News: India’s Net Services Exports Fall 5% in July as AI Impact Comes Into Focus

AI is impacting IT exports, as net service exports for July 2026 fell to $16.95 billion. For a long time, the momentum in services surplus offset a major part of merchandise trade deficit and kept  the current account deficit in check. July net services exports are -5% lower than June 2026. Analysts attribute this slowdown to AI effect, although it is not clear if it is a blip or a structural shift. For FY26, services exports at $421.3 billion were nearly 50% of total exports of $863.1 billion. With goods exports under pressure, India cannot afford to lose out on the services pie.

Gen-Z F&O Trading Raises Concerns as 88.5% of Traders Under 30 Report Losses in FY26

The latest statistics put out by SEBI highlights some weird relationships between Gen-Z and F&O trading. Nearly 88.5% of people under the age of 30 have incurred losses in F&O trading in FY26. In fact, traders under the age of 30 accounted for 43% of the trader base, one of the downside risks of easy onboarding in F&O. Nearly 75% of traders in F&O had annual income of less than ₹5 lakhs; which means low loss appetite. The ratio of derivative turnover to portfolio value drops sharply with age. Traders aged below 30 leveraged their portfolio 93 times in F&O.

Stock Market News: FPI Ownership in Indian Equities Falls to 17-Year Low as Domestic Institutions Gain Ground

The trend of FPI ownership in Indian equities falling has continued; and has fallen to a 17-year low of 15.1%. This was after record FPI outflows of $15 billion from Indian equities in Q1FY27. At the same time, ownership of domestic mutual funds in Indian equities rose for the 15th consecutive quarter to a record 11.6%. DII ownership touched 19.5%. For the last 7 quarters in a row, the DII share has been higher than the FPI share. Promoter stake in Nifty listed companies touched 50.2%. Most institutions have also shown a propensity to move from large caps to mid-caps.

PSU Banks Put ₹49,746 Crore of Loans Up for Sale as Buyer Appetite Remains Cautious

In the recent June quarter, PSU banks initiated a total of 36 sale processes for loans with principal of ₹49,746 crore. Nearly 80% of these loans represented repeated sale attempts, indicating that appetite for buying PSU bank loans has been cautious. Two major PSU banks offering loans in the market were IOB and Indian Bank. Both these banks offered bulk of the repeat accounts, which were not sold earlier. Selling NPAs to ARCs gives an immediate and clean exit to the banks. Private sector banks also offered loans worth ₹10,734 crore; a mix of corporate and retail loans.

Stock Market News: Nifty 50 Q1FY27 Earnings Beat Expectations With 4% YoY Growth

With the Q1FY27 results season almost completed, the takeaway is that, it has been better than expected. Nifty-50 companies reported 4% yoy growth in earnings, against consensus estimate of just 1%. Had it not been for oil price impact on input prices, earnings would have grown in the early teens. Oil & gas sector was a significant drag on earnings due to marketing losses incurred by selling petrol and diesel below the breakeven point. The entire earnings accretion came  from financials and metals. Despite input costs pressures, lower GST kept the growth momentum strong.

Conclusion

From strong forex inflows and Citi’s growing institutional business to changing airline market share, falling FPI ownership, PSU bank loan sales and better-than-expected Nifty 50 earnings, today’s stock market news highlights important shifts across the Indian economy and financial markets. Stay informed with Jarvis Invest as we track the developments that matter to investors.
