The stock market news today is being led by the RBI’s latest monetary policy decision, with the central bank raising the repo rate and shifting its stance towards calibrated tightening. Jarvis Invest brings you the key stock market news updates, covering the impact of higher rates on inflation, the rupee, banks and borrowing costs, along with major developments across GST reforms, private debt placements and corporate fundraising.

Beyond monetary policy, the rupee’s fall to a five-month low, Ola Electric’s ₹1,000 crore rights issue, the impact of FCNR(B) inflows on bank deposit rates and India’s expanding oil trade with Russia are also in focus. Here are the eight key stock market news updates investors need to know today.

Stock Market News: RBI Raises Repo Rate to 5.50% and Signals Further Tightening

As expected, the RBI hiked the benchmark repo rates by 25 bps to 5.50%. This takes the SDF rate up to 5.25% and the bank rate/MSF rate to 5.75%. Both these rates are pegged at a 25-bps discount and a 25-bps premium respectively to the repo rate. In addition, RBI surprised the street by changing the stance of the monetary policy from “Neutral” to “Calibrated Tightening” to underline that rate cuts were ruled out. This is a strong indication of one more rate hike of 25 basis points in December. The change in stance got 2 dissenting votes from MPC members.

Stock Market News: RBI Raises FY27 GDP Forecast to 7.1% as Inflation Outlook Also Rises

The RBI, as part of the policy announcement, also made some tweaks to the macro numbers. For the full fiscal year FY27, the RBI MPC raised its GDP forecast by 40 bps from 6.7% to 7.1%. This was necessitated after the Q1FY27 GDP growth came in sharply higher at 7.8%. At the same time, the RBI MPC also hiked the inflation estimates for FY27 by 20 bps from 5.0% to 5.2%. The higher inflation estimates have seen pressure coming from higher food prices, elevated crude prices, and sticky core inflation. The inflation spike is expected to be uniform across quarters.

Stock Market News: SEBI Eases Merchant Banker Rules for Eligible Private Debt Placements

In a significant move, SEBI has exempted eligible listed issuers from the merchant banker requirements for private debt placements. This will apply to AA- and above rated securities placed privately. To be eligible for this concession, the issuer must have been listed on the stock exchanges for more than one year. Also, such issuers should not have defaulted on any of their debt obligations in the last 3 years. The debt paper must be senior or unsubordinated and secured by a first charge on identifiable company assets. This move was based on market feedback.

Stock Market News: GST Reforms Could Unlock ₹60,000 Crore of Liquidity for Indian Industry

Some of the GST credit reforms proposed by the GST Council are likely to unlock ₹60,000 crore of liquidity for Indian industry. This will enable companies to plan their working capital requirements more precisely. One of the big changes is to extend the benefits of input tax credit (ITC) for several goods and services. For instance, life insurance and health insurance do not get ITC as they are exempt from GST. However, since group life and health insurance are not exempt from GST, ITC will be extended to them. Impact will be seen in textiles, services, fertilizers, RE and EV.

Stock Market News: Rupee Falls to 5-Month Low of ₹96.85 Despite RBI Rate Hike

The rupee plunged to a 5-month low of ₹96.85/$, despite the RBI hiking the repo rates, which is generally seen as supportive of rupee strength. The rupee weakness came after FPIs continued to be net sellers, as they expect the rate hike to put pressure on bond prices and equity valuations. Also, the prospects of further upside in crude oil prices and the 100% tariffs by the US are likely to be an overhang on the rupee. Also, the RBI shifted its intervention cap from ₹96/$ to ₹97/$. One of the reasons for the rate hike was a floor price for the rupee and preventing a free fall.

Ola Electric Fixes ₹27 Price for ₹1,000 Crore Rights Issue

Ola Electric, a major manufacturer of electric 2-wheelers, has fixed the price of its ₹1000 crore rights issue at ₹27 per share. The stock has been under tremendous pressure post its listing. The rights issue will entail the issue of 37.03 crore partially paid equity shares. The final price of the issue has just been finalized, although it is not too clear how the company plans to leverage its position in the RE industry. The rights issue had been announced by Ola Electric about a week back, but the price of the rights issue was announced on Wednesday. It will dilute earnings.

FCNR(B) Inflows May Cap Deposit Rates While Higher Loan Rates Support Bank Margins

The FCNR(B) deluge of $133 billion is likely to act as a cap on deposit rates offered by banks. These FCNR(B) flows will reduce the bank demand for deposits and keep a cap on the interest rates paid on deposits. Thus, despite the repo rate hike by the RBI in October, the deposit rates are unlikely to go up. However, with robust demand for lending and much of the demand coming from sub-prime individual borrowers, loan rates are likely to go up in tandem with the repo rates. This will ensure a gradual widening of NIM spreads for the banks in coming months.

India’s Russian Oil Dependence Grows as Moscow Seeks a Larger Share of Imports

Russian oil deliveries to India had crossed $43 billion in year 2025, while the demand was up by 25% in the first half of 2026. In the last few months, Russia has been accounting for close to 40% of India’s oil import basket. Now, Russia is trying to take that ratio closer to 50%. However, with the Ship-to-Ship (STS) transfers and the reopening of the East-West pipeline to Yanbu, the Gulf flows should improve. India and Russia are not only looking to broaden oil trade, but also looking to expand it to other areas like fertilizers, chemicals, nuclear energy, defence etc.

Conclusion

Today’s stock market news reflects a market navigating tighter monetary policy alongside strong economic growth and evolving corporate funding conditions. Jarvis Invest brings these stock market news developments together to help investors understand how the RBI’s rate hike, changing inflation outlook and rupee weakness could influence different parts of the Indian economy.

At the same time, SEBI’s relaxation for eligible private debt placements and proposed GST credit reforms could improve liquidity and financing flexibility for businesses. Ola Electric’s rights issue, the impact of FCNR(B) inflows on bank margins and India’s growing relationship with Russian oil also highlight important developments across corporate and financial markets. Investors will continue to watch interest rates, currency movements, liquidity and energy costs as key market themes.
